Electrolux Design Lab 2009 entries

As promised, here are several more entries from the 2009 Electrolux Design Lab contest that are within the top 25. Few are not exactly what one would call home appliances, but they are here for your viewing. Just one man opinion, but some should have made it to the final Eight.

The Mini Dishwasher by Matthieu Ducarne, ISD France, France

The Eco friendly countertop dishwasher that will use enzymes to clean dishes by breaking down biodegradable matter into water-soluble waste, reducing the environmental impact to a bare minimum. Even the used water will be recycled inside.

Wall Oven by Ludovic Peperstraete, Institut Superieur de Design, France

This futuristic wall-mounted oven will utilize 3 lasers to cook food to perfection. Instead of choosing the cooking temperature for the oven, the oven will provide a choice of different textures to cook with.

Lenee by Andrej Suchov, L’École de Design Nantes Atlantique, France

Clothes in a future are made from organic textiles and can repair themselves, much like the human skin. The compact Lenee washing machine shall employ microwaves to repair, wash, and even change the texture and color of clothes at the push of a button.

Maglevus by Jan Semerák, FSI Industrial Design, VUT Brno, Czech Republic

The future washing machines will be quite different from the ones we use today. Maglevus is a washing machine that uses ultrasound to clean clothes and a levitating drum that washes clothes based on weight rather than using standard cycles. This will not only improve the performance doing 6 kg of laundry in 10 minutes, but save energy compared to regular washing machines.

Smart Space by Inesa Malafej, Vilnius Academy of Arts, Lithuania

With the looming population explosion and lack of water, the environment friendly Smart Space is all-in-one compact washing machine, shower, and dryer. It will take only one square meter of floor space – enough to fit in even the smallest apartments. The Smart Space recycles the water used for washing and showering and has two different drying modes, one for drying clothes and one for drying people.

Butl-R-Bot by Tim Leeding, Coventry University, UK

This robotic kitchen assistant, the Butl-R-Bot will offer responsive artificial intelligence and advanced technologies, such as humanetic arms, fan arrays, cameras and advanced sensors, allow it to cook meals, order and collect food, as well as interact with kitchen utensils and appliances.

The Egg by Vlad Icobet, University of Fine Arts Bucharest, Romania

The Egg is an all-in-one cooking and food preparation unit that unfolds like a flower from a cylindrical starting position. The wings form three separate units to provide a place to prepare food, a cooking surface, and a washing facility. The Egg will come with an interactive holographic projector allowing you to find information online to create recipes or get cooking instructions.

Colorful Washer by Jun Tao, Zhejiang University, China

The Colorful Washer is designed to instantly take a picture of whatever you like and apply both the visual pattern and the texture to your clothes you do. A palm-sized stone made out of bamboo and recycled plastic, will produce and emit micro particles that attach to the fabric of your clothes changing the pattern, texture, and even smell. It also uses the micro particles to clean clothes. Uses kinetic energy to recharge so if stored in your purse it will always be ready to use.

Vaccine Refrigerator by Juan Camilo Garcia Ramirez, Universidad el Bosque, Columbia

The Vaccine Refrigerator is divided into three independently regulated compartments that hold more than 1,000 doses of several different types of vaccines and antivenins. The refrigerator uses a magnetic refrigeration technique and a water-cooling system, so it can cool the contents very quickly after being opened while using less energy than the refrigerators of today.

Origin Bubbles by Yu Siou Liu, National United University, Taiwan

Self-contained, palmed-size packets, the Origin Bubbles electronically regulate the temperature of food molecules that are then transformed into tasty, real life dishes at the touch of a button. You will be able to store different types of food molecules for a complete meal while reducing the storage space, energy, and water required for conventional food preparation.

Geco by Sydney Avila, University of Western Sydney, Australia

The circular, robotic window washer, Geco will be indispensable in a future with glass walls used to a much larger extent, and requiring cleaning. The robot has an advanced micro fibre ring that spins while it cleans, and its gecko feet, made from nanotechnology, keep it fixed to the window. Runs on solar power and changes colors and patterns as it cleans, blending naturally into its surroundings without obstructing the view.

Kitchen Window by Cornelius Comanns, University of Applied Sciences Munich, Germany

The Kitchen Window is the space-saving kitchen module and window in one. It resembles a regular window with see-through glass panes, but can be folded out revealing a stove for cooking and a sink for washing dishes. This is made possible by using power glass, a transparent material that heats up like a regular burner.

Serpo by Anna Karmazina, Moscow Institute of Electronic Technology, Russia

Shaped like an extinct sea-dwelling trilobite, Serpo is a versatile semi-robotic cleaning device that takes care of all your bathroom-cleaning needs. It will clean showers, bathtubs, sinks, floors, and walls by using a combination of several nozzles, a cleaning cloth, and robber hose moving across surfaces with the help of sucker pads facilitating wall climbing. When inactive, Serpo recharges its batteries in a wall-mounted charging station.
